Monica Lam, Class of 2004

Monica Lam, ’04 MA, serves as CEO of The Daily Californian.

As a reporter, producer and filmmaker, she has traveled across five continents telling stories from inside factories in China to deep in the Amazon jungle. For most of the past decade, she worked at KQED, the Bay Area’s NPR and PBS affiliate, where she served as a TV executive producer and senior editor of digital content. Prior to that, Monica worked at the Center for Investigative Reporting, where she examined conditions inside maximum security prisons and abuse in state-run institutions for the developmentally disabled.

Previously, she produced and directed “Journey of the Bonesetter’s Daughter,” a documentary that follows novelist Amy Tan as she creates an opera based on her family history. Monica’s work has been honored with an Alfred I. duPont Award, five Emmy Awards, Edward R. Murrow Awards and a Gracie Award and has been recognized by Investigative Reporters and Editors, the Society of Professional Journalists, Religion News Association and the San Francisco Peninsula Press Club.

Monica studied Urban Studies at Stanford University and in 2004 earned a master’s degree in journalism at Cal, where she earned real writing chops by reporting for The Daily Cal.
