David E. Thigpen
David E. Thigpen designed UC Berkeley’s undergraduate journalism curriculum and served as Director of Undergraduate Programs from 2016-2024. He is a former Time Magazine reporter who covered Wall Street, national politics and popular music. His writing has also appeared in The New York Times and Rolling Stone. In 2020 David led a team of Berkeley Journalism grad students whose investigation into violent domestic extremism in the U.S. won a Polk Award for National Reporting and was featured in the PBS 2021 Frontline tv documentary America Insurrection.
Previously, David was a fellow at Institute for the Future, a Palo Alto, California think tank where he conducted research on the future of cities. David is a graduate of Brown University and Columbia University’s Graduate School of Journalism.
